Why We Study Art?

Everyone watches TV, video or films, looks at illustrations and photographs, is influenced by posters and advertisements.

Our environment is affected by the actions of people all around the world.  We live in buildings, decorate and furnish our homes, buy clothes and use products designed and manufactured by industry.

Art and Design is concerned with developing understanding of the visual world in which we live and in helping individuals express and communicate their ideas and emotions.

 The Subject Skills

Art and Design helps us understand what we see, develops imagination and creativity and provides the practical skills with which visual work can be produced.  Knowledge and our ability to comment in artistic terms is developed through critical work.

The Content of The Art and Design Course

1.     Pupils will be taught to observe and to record what they see.

2.       Pupils will learn to control tools, materials and techniques: pencil, brushes, paint, clay, printing, photography, computer graphics etc.

3.       Pupils will learn about the basic visual language of Art: colour, line, shape, texture, perspective, etc.

4.       Pupils will be taught to solve design problems in an imaginative way.

5.       Pupils will have opportunities to express their ideas creatively.

6.       Pupils will be introduced to the work of artists and designers, past and present.

7.       Pupils' work will be concerned with topics such as the Human Image, the Man-Made Environment, Media Communications, and the Natural Environment.

8 .     Pupils will be expected to do practical and written homework as support for their work in class.

Assessment

There are three main project topics per year plus two short School based units.  All work produced is kept in individual pupil folios.  At the end of each project an assessment of work completed is made with performance recorded on a pupil profile.  Assessed elements include: Expressive Skills, Design Skills, Critical Skills, Behaviour and Effort.
