The aim of the course is to
develop key skills in handling information through the use of Technology.
The course is based around ‘Core Skills ICT’ in Information and
Communication Technology. Core Skills gives thorough hands-on coverage of
the core knowledge and skills required for ICT at Secondary 1 and 2 and
beyond.
The course booklets guide the students in a carefully structured way
through a full range of core ICT skills, techniques and knowledge. Pupils
will learn about common applications (word-processing, spreadsheets,
databases, graphics, DTP, multi-media, etc). These are taught through a
‘generic’ style of application; so transfer to all commercial applications
is very easily accomplished. Pupils then progress through each Microsoft
office application becoming familiar with each application’s functions.

Throughout the 2 year course
pupils will develop abilities to be selective in their choice of software
and resources and to be critical in relation to information presented in a
variety of ways. The pupils will be encouraged to learn, understand and use
the language, terminology and symbols appropriate to the area of study.
Towards the end of the course pupils should show increased confidence and
competence in being able to construct simple documents (including text and
graphics); prepare, use evaluate simple computer-based models and
information systems using spreadsheets and databases. Together with the
knowledge of some of the ways in which computers and other forms of ICT are
used in Industry and Commerce along with the advantages and disadvantages of
the use of ICT in society and the importance of the Internet.
