S1 / S2 ICT

The aim of the course is to develop key skills in handling information through the use of Technology.  The course is based around ‘Core Skills ICT’ in Information and Communication Technology.  Core Skills gives thorough hands-on coverage of the core knowledge and skills required for ICT at Secondary 1 and 2 and beyond.

The course booklets guide the students in a carefully structured way through a full range of core ICT skills, techniques and knowledge.  Pupils will learn about common applications (word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, DTP, multi-media, etc).  These are taught through a ‘generic’ style of application; so transfer to all commercial applications is very easily accomplished.  Pupils then progress through each Microsoft office application becoming familiar with each application’s functions.

The areas of study for this course are :

Text Handling                                                  -  Word Processing / Keyboard Skills

Information Handling                                      -  Database / Multimedia

Modelling                                                        -  Spreadsheet / Simulations

Position, Movement & Control                      -  Programming languages

Applications of IT in Society                          -  Awareness of IT

Internet                                                               -Research and safety

Graphics                                                               -Design and creation. 2D and 3D

Throughout the 2 year course pupils will develop abilities to be selective in their choice of software and resources and to be critical in relation to information presented in a variety of ways.  The pupils will be encouraged to learn, understand and use the language, terminology and symbols appropriate to the area of study.  Towards the end of the course pupils should show increased confidence and competence in being able to construct simple documents (including text and graphics); prepare, use evaluate simple computer-based models and information systems using spreadsheets and databases.  Together with the knowledge of some of the ways in which computers and other forms of ICT are used in Industry and Commerce along with the advantages and disadvantages of the use of ICT in society and the importance of the Internet.
