Why We Study English
Without an adequate knowledge of the
language pupils will be disadvantaged in all their other subjects, not all
of them on the timetable, for it is by means of language that we try to make
sense of ourselves, other people, and the world around us.
The Subject Skills
English is the close study of our native
language. In this study we try to introduce pupils to and
familiarise them with, the wide
variety of purposes to which our language be put. Our concern is always
with English (or Scots) well used; and English (or Scots) is well used when
it is appropriate to its specific purpose; when it does, that is, what it
was intended to do. The four 'modes' of our subject are Reading, Writing,
Listening and Talking.
