Why We Study History
As well as helping pupils to develop
certain skills which stand them in good stead inside school and in later
life, History helps pupils better understand themselves and their society by
looking at the past and the changes that have made us what we are today.
Knowing the past enables us better to understand the present.
The
Subject Skills
The study of history requires an
understanding of the basic ideas of the subjects studied, and the ability to
draw conclusions from evidence. Also important is the ability to express
ideas clearly. The subject skills are divided into:
1. Knowledge and Understanding - The ability to grasp and retain
important ideas and concepts.
2. Enquiry Skills - The ability to work with historical sources,
assessing their value and accuracy.
3. Investigating – gathering, informing and drawing conclusions.
The Content of the History Course
The
following will be studied in two six week blocks per year:
S 1
1. The Romans
2. The Scottish Wars of Independence
S2

Assessment
Pupils are assessed in the skills of
Knowledge and Understanding and Enquiry Skills at the end of each unit of
work. For each of the Units in S1 and S2, pupils will carry out an
