Why We Study Home Economics

Health and Food Technology allows pupils to further develop knowledge and skills already acquired in primary schools in the area of Environmental Studies, Personal and Social Development and the Expressive Arts.  They are given the opportunity to learn about their own needs and the needs of others, and learn to cooperate in shared endeavours.

The course in S1 and S2 introduces pupils to essential life-skills needed to cope with important issues in the technological world in which we live.  They are taught in a safe environment and have the opportunity to participate in fun practical sessions aimed at encouraging their creative ability as well as increasing their self confidence and thus allowing them to reach their full potential.

  The Subject Skills

Knowledge and Understanding

Pupils will acquire knowledge essential to basic human needs including Health, Safety, Hygiene, Healthy Eating, Nutrition and Consumer Issues.

Handling Information

Pupils will develop skills in handling and using information in the form of recipes, tables, diagrams and symbols.  They will also acquire the ability to solve problems.

Practical and Organisational Skills

Pupils will develop practical and organisational skills in fabric and food production and will be able to demonstrate these in a safe environment.

The following topics will be covered over the course of S1 and S2

  • Food hygiene and safety

  • Using equipment

  • Healthy Eating

  • Nutrition

  • Design and make a cushion

  • Christmas cross stitch

  • Consumer issues

Assessment

The pupils will be assessed at their own level using various methods at regular intervals throughout the course.  The purpose of which is to check on pupils progress measured against their own ability and to check on their understanding of the course.  It is also used to make recommendations for future courses.  The results of these assessments will be issued to parents at the end of each topic as a progress report.

There is a charge of £12.00 in August towards the practical materials used in the course work.
