Why We Study Physical Education

Physical Education is the only subject that focuses children’s efforts and learning on their body and its physical development. Evidence indicates that the health and wellbeing of children affect their ability to achieve and their confidence to learn. When children are fit and healthy, they are more able to concentrate, learn and do well in school.

The aim of the department is to provide all pupils with good quality physical education by:

  • Offering pupils worthwhile and enjoyable physical activity experiences
  • Meeting the needs of all pupils
  • Keeping pupils actively involved for most of the class time
  • Including cooperative and competitive experiences
  • Developing pupils’ self confidence
  • Helping pupils evaluate their performance

Programme of Study

A wide range of activities (taking account of pupil interests and facilities available) are used to work towards the key areas of attainment, achievement and aspiration.

Course Content

The course follows the National Guidelines for Expressive Arts 5 – 14. Teaching focuses on areas of: skill development; developing fitness; creating and designing; cooperating, sharing, communicating and competing; observing, reflecting, describing and responding.

Assessment

Pupils are assessed in relation to the Attainment Outcomes and Targets set out in the National Guidelines for Expressive Arts 5 – 14.

Kit

It is essential that pupils come properly prepared with appropriate kit for physical education. Even if not fully fit, kit should still be brought so that pupils can be involved in a relevant aspect of the lesson.
