Why We Study Science

Throughout the two year Science course we aim to develop in the pupils:

(a)     an ability to think clearly and precisely.

(b)     skills in language, communication and observation.

(c)     a degree of self reliance and self confidence.

The course used is called ‘Starting Science for Scotland’.  It is a new course prepared to support the science component of Environmental Studies under the 5-14 National Guidelines.  Differentiation is integral to the course, allowing pupils to work at a level appropriate to their ability.  It has also been designed to allow clear progression throughout.

Course Content

In addition pupils participate in the ‘Thinking Science’ programme of work during S1 and S2.  This is designed to help improve their thinking skills.

 The Subject Skills

Knowledge and Understanding/Problem Solving

Assessment is carried out during the two years using end of unit tests.

 Practical Skills

Throughout the two years pupils carry out numerous experiments and investigations.  They are taught to plan, collect evidence, record and evaluate during these activities.
